World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is an MMORPG, and one thing that’s very important in any MMORPG is the game’s economy. Think of it like real life economy where players buy and trade their goods, and make gold in the process. Gold is used to power up your character and purchase anything from gear, mounts to various quality-of-life things. Needless to say, it’s extremely important!
Now, in order to always be ahead of the curve and have your pockets filled with gold, you’ll have to learn a thing or two. Obtaining gold can be quite a time-consuming task, so we’ve prepared some tips for you in our WotLK gold farming guide.
Gold Farming Tip #1 – Only learn the essential skills while leveling up in WotLK
This is a common mistake new players make. They’ll level a character, visit their class trainer and learn every available skill. Now, if you have gold already, this won’t be an issue. However, as a new player you’ll most likely be strapped for cash and blowing all your money on skills is a good way to hit an early wall in your leveling journey.
Instead, buy skills that directly increase your character’s damage and leave the rest for later. When you farm up some gold, you can return and train all of them without any issues.
Gold Farming Tip #2 – Vendor your skins
When you’re new and you got no gold, you gotta find ways to make it somehow. Luckily, the Skinning profession is the perfect solution here. It’s easy to level and the skins and animal hides you get, you can sell directly to NPCs for some quick and easy cash.
While this is an excellent strategy early on, it’s not so lucrative in the later stages of the game, at which point it’s better to start selling your skins to other players via the in-game auction house.
Gold Farming Tip #3 – Sell EVERYTHING!
You heard it, sell everything you find! If it’s an item that’s uncommon, rare, or even epic – toss that baby on the auction house and let it sit until the right buyer comes along. Selling greens you find along the way can quickly add up, netting you a solid gold pile for later on.
Even some white quality items are used in certain profession crafts, so it’s always a good idea to check the prices for those as well. You never know what might happen.
Gold Farming Tip #4 – Do a WotLK dungeon every once in a while.
Dungeons are a great source of loot, but also raw gold. Most of the dungeons in WoW WotLK are populated by humanoid monsters, which always drop copper and silver when slain. Over the course of a single run, this can turn into several gold just like that. And if you chain a few dungeons in a row, you’re looking at some pretty hefty passive profit!
Gold Farming Tip #5 – Don’t buy expensive items while leveling!
The final tip is probably our most important one. Having a lot of gold also has a lot to do with your ability to keep your gold and not spend it on the first shiny thing you see. You’ll often see people selling cool loot in chat and in the auction house, and your first instinct might be to buy it. Please, don’t!
If you’re not 100% sure the purchase won’t cost you later down the road, it’s best to save and continue leveling. Eventually, something will drop that’s either as good or even better than the item you were about to purchase, and you’ll be lucky you weren’t hasty.
